Cleveland kidnapping suspect held on $8 million bond

May 9 - Ariel Castro stared at the ground during his arraignment in an Ohio court on four counts of kidnapping, three counts of rape in connection with three women who were freed from his house earlier this week. Deborah Gembara reports.

Ariel Castro did not look up once during his brief appearance in an Ohio court.
The 52-year-old is charged with four counts of kidnapping, and three counts of rape ---- all felonies.
Castro's attorney, public defender Kathleen DeMetz.
SOUNDBITE: Castro's attorney, public defender Kathleen DeMetz saying:
"He is waiving examination on each case. With respect to bond on each case, he is on unemployment and to the best of my knowledge he has no convinctions on felonies or serious misdemeanors."
Assistant Prosecutor Brian Murphy saying:

"Mr Castro stands before you a capitve, in captivity, a prisoner. The women are free to resume their lives that were interrupted and also with the promise and the hope that justice will be served. To ensure that justice is served, to protect the victims and the community that Mr Castro manipulated and decievved, the state is asking that the bond be set at $5 million cash surety."
Bond was set for $8 million.
SOUNDBITE: Judge Lauren Moore saying:
"Bond will be set at two million in each case. Two million dollars cash surety in each case."
This is Castro's first appearance in court since three women escaped from his Cleveland home after being declared missing over a decade ago.
