ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION)
STORY: Prince Harry was a special guest at a tea reception hosted by US First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House on Thursday (May 9) to honour American military mothers.
The Prince walked into a hall room packed with mothers and their young children to wild cheers, as the First Lady expressed her joy at having him there.
"Well, it is my honour to welcome Prince Harry to the White House today. As you all might know, Prince Harry is a Captain in the Army Air Corps in the British Armed Forces (crowd applauding and cheering)," she said.
Prince Harry had opened his week-long tour of the United States with a stop at a photographic exhibition of land mine clearance efforts co-ordinated by the HALO Trust, a charitable organisation dedicated to cleansing war zones of mines and other explosives.
He was escorted by Senator John McCain and Guy Willoughby, the chief of the HALO Trust in North America.
Later in the day, he was the guest of honour at a dinner banquet hosted at British Ambassador to the U.S. Peter Westmacott's residence in D.C., during which Harry gave a statement in honour of his mother.
"This evening gives me great personal pleasure to my mother who believed passionately in this cause, would be so proud of my association with HALO and in her special way, she adopted it as her own."
On Friday (May 10), Harry is expected to pay his respects at Section 60 of Arlington National Cemetery, where many soldiers killed in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars are buried.
He will also lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown at the cemetery and tour the prosthetic rehabilitation facility at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
