Seventy-two-year-old Dr. Kermit Gosnell was found guilty on Monday of murdering three infants. He could now face the death penalty. Gosnell, who ran the now-shuttered Women's Medical Society Clinic, was accused of delivering live babies and then deliberately severing their spinal cords. Witness testimony described the babies as born breathing, moving and making sounds. Testimony also depicted a filthy clinic, and prosecutors called it a "house of horrors." Gosnell was also found guilty of multiple counts of late-term abortions, failure to comply with state law, and the involuntary manslaughter of a patient who died from a drug overdose. The jury also found Gosnell's assistant Eileen O'Neill guilty of conspiracy and theft by deception for pretending to be a doctor and charging for her service. Anti-abortion advocates hailed the verdict as evidence that laws restricting abortions must be strengthened. Abortion rights groups said Gosnell was an aberration and the case underscores the need for women to have access to safe and legal abortions.
