Rhino birth adds to beleaguered world numbers

May 21 - An Australian zoo hails the birth of a rare white rhino last week as a huge success for the zoo's breading program. Tara Cleary reports.

A precious birth for a species under siege. White rhino Mopani gave birth to a male calf in Australia's Taronga Western Plains Zoo. Rhino keeper Pascale Benoit says the birth is very important. SOUNDBITE: Pascale Benoit, senior white rhino keeper, Taronga Western Plains Zoo, saying (English): "Rhino poaching is on the increase as years go by and also to our female Mopani without having bred in a captive situation this little fellow is quite important to the gene pool because it's her first offspring that can enter the region's breading program." The new arrival has yet to be named.
