ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: Clashes broke out near Istanbul's Gezi Park on Tuesday when police failed to remove the barricades set up by protesters. Riot police used water cannon to try and disperse protesters in Gumussuyu, near Besiktas district where Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's office is located. Clashes have been taking place in the area for the past few days as thousands of demonstrators marched there asking for the government's resignation. Protesters have set up barricades blocking every road to Istanbul's Taksim square to thwart the police from entering occupied Gezi Park immediately after they pulled out on Sunday . On Tuesday, Turkey's deputy prime minister apologized for "excessive violence" by police in an effort to defuse days of unrest, comments which contrasted sharply with Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's defiant dismissal of the protesters. With Erdogan abroad and strikes and demonstrations still rumbling on after five days, Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc sought to assuage some of the anger at the government's initial hardline response to what began as a sit-in against plans to build on an Istanbul park.
