PLEASE NOTE: EDIT CONTAINS CONVERTED 4:3 MATERIAL The battle between rebels and government forces for the town of Qusair appears to be fought with conventional weapons. This footage from a social media website purports to show fighting near the town on Monday. Reuters is unable to independently verify the content. But France says it now has firm evidence that chemical weapons have been used elsewhere. French officials say tests - the first to comply with international standards - prove the nerve gas Sarin has been deployed. The tests were carried out on samples taken after a government helicopter bombed a target in the north. In another case they said it was not possible to prove who'd been responsible. The National Coalition of Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces in Turkey is urging tough international action. (SOUNDBITE) (French) NATIONAL COALITION OF SYRIAN REVOLUTION AND OPPOSITION FORCES, PRESS SPOKESPERSON AHMED KAMEL, SAYING: "I have no doubt that the Syrian regime has used chemical weapons against large towns in Syria. And they will use them again because they have no other option." The United Nations which on Tuesday issued a report cataloguing Syrian government atrocities said it too was aware of the chemical weapons allegations. (SOUNDBITE) (English) MARTIN NESIRKY, SPOKESMAN FOR THE UNITED NATIONS SECRETARY-GENERAL, SAYING: "The Secretary-General remains gravely concerned about any allegations of chemical weapons use by any party in Syria and the Secretary-General has of course, as you know, stressed on many occasions that any use of such weapons would be an outrageous crime." The growing evidence of poison gas use is a dilemma for Western nations including the United States. They've promised to act if such weapons are used but have no obvious path for military intervention.
