Protesters in Turkey remain defiant following another night of clashes with police. On Wednesday, demonstrators camped out in Istanbul's Gezi Park vowed they would continue their sit-in amid worries authorities planned to storm their ranks yet again - despite scheduled talks later between Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan and protest organisers. In the capital Ankara, protesters refused to leave and were standing by those in Istanbul. They too had concerns police would try to forcibly end their sit-in, adding that threats and violence would not prevent them from returning. Yetsreday, police filled Istanbul's iconic Taksim Square with tear gas and used water canon try and drive protesters away following almost two weeks of anti-government demonstrations. The fierce crackdown has prompted international condemnation and calls for restraint. What began as a protest against plans to turn Gezi Park into a shopping district has transformed into a widespread display of public anger over perceived government authoritarianism.
