ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: Nine international celebrities including Colombian rock musician Juanes, author Khaled Hosseini and international supermodel Alek Wek issued public service announcments in honor of World Refugee Day, which will be recognized on June 20. According to the United Nations 1951 Refugee Convention, a refugee is "someone who fled his or her home and country owing to a well-founded fear of persecution because of his/her race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion." Furthermore, some have also become refugees as a result of natural or human-made disasters. According to the United Nations High Comission for Refugees (UNHCR), the 48 Least Developed Countries provided asylum to 2.3 million refugees. The UNHCR currently operates in 126 countries. In 2011, record numbers of newly displaced refugees fled their home countries, with forced displacement levels remaining high at over 42 million.
