June 14 - Prices for fresh eggs surged 41.6 percent in May according to government data. Bobbi Rebell reports.

The Daily Digit is 41.6 percent. That's how much fresh egg prices jumped in May according to the U.S. government. Could eggs be the next breakfast for billionaires? Egg prices are sizzling. Blame the Easter bunny! According to Nielsen scan data, egg category sales were up 3.8 percent for Easter compared to last year. That means 8.1 million more dozens were sold. And then they say post- Easter demand continued strong through April and May. The U.S. is also exporting more to Mexico because salmonella outbreaks there tightened supply. Here in the U.S. the average American eats about 250 per year according to the USDA. And despite the trend higher- they remain affordable. According to the American Egg Board, a dozen eggs runs $1.92 or 16 cents per egg.
