STORY: Elton John and Bernie Taupin received the Johnny Mercer Award at the Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction and Awards dinner in New York on Thursday (June 13).
The duo have been working together since 1967 and penned the hits "Rocket Man," Tiny Dancer," and Saturday Night's All Right For Fighting" which Sting performed during the ceremony.
"My first real important relationship wasn't with my father, wasn't with my mother, it was with my grandmother. And secondly it was with Bernie Taupin. He became the brother I never had, the friend I also wanted and one of the loves of my life and still is," said John standing next to Taupin.
Motown Records founder Berry Gordy was honored for his historic career and the creation of music that continues to be an influence for the music industry.
Aerosmith song-writing duo Steven Tyler and Joe Perry are among the newest hall of fame members. Singer Tyler and guitarist Perry wrote such rock classics as "Dream On," "Walk This Way" and "Love in an Elevator."
Other inductees included British songwriter Tony Hatch, Tina Turner songwriter Holly Knight, and J.D. Souther, who helped write hits for 1970s rock group the Eagles and British-American duo Mick Jones and Lou Gramm of rock group Foreigner.
Jones and Gramm gave the crowd a sample of their skills by performing their hits "Juke Box Hero" and "I Want to Know What Love Is." Briton Jones and American Gramm wrote the mega-hit "I Want to Know What Love Is" in 1984, as well as 1970s hits "Double Vision" and "Feels Like the First Time."
2007 American Idol winner Jordin Sparks performed Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" as the tune was presented with the Towering Song Award.
Rapper Wiz Khalifa performed his song "Word Hard, Play Hard" written by Benny Blanco, who was honored with the Hal David Starlight Award, "which is giving to emerging songwriters who are having a major impact in the music world.
A panel of music industry voters chose the five inductees into the Hall of Fame from a list of 24 nominees that was released last year.
