Gunmen storm Pakistan hospital

Jun. 16 - At least 23 people are killed as gunmen storm a hospital in the Pakistani city of Quetta, hours after a blast on a bus carrying female students. Sarah Toms reports.

The initial violence in Quetta began when a bomb exploded on a bus carrying female university students home from lessons. At least fourteen women died in the explosion and many others were wounded. Just hours later explosions rocked the hospital where the survivors were being treated. A suicide bomber had lain in ambush. Militants armed with grenades exchanged fire with security forces who rushed to the scene. Police said nurses, hospital security personnel and a senior city official were among at least eight others killed. (SOUNDBITE) (Urdu) QUETTA POLICE CHIEF, MIR ZUBAIR MEHMOOD, SAYING: "Many people had gathered here when a suicide bomber blew himself up. Some terrorists took positions inside the hospital. They opened fire as the law-enforcing agencies tried to go in and clear the area." The five hour seige ended after Pakistani troops stormed the building and freed 35 hostages. The violence in Quetta came just hours after militants destroyed a historic house elsewhere in the province and killed a policeman. Quetta has seen a surge in militant violence in recent months. It is not yet known who is reponsible but in the past attacks have often been carried out by separatists and Islamists who oppose women's education.
