ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) Sopranos star James Gandolfini suffered an apparent heart attack while on holiday in Italy and was found in his hotel room by family before taken to the hospital where he passed away, a friend told reporters in Rome on Thursday (June 20). "Last night at approximately 10 p.m. James Gandolfini, while on vacation in Rome, experienced a medical emergency. The hotel notified the emergency crews who responded and first aid was administered before Mr. Gandolfini was taken to the hospital where he died of an apparent heart attack. Our prayers and condolences go to Mr. Gandolfini's family and friends. We ask you all to please respect the family's privacy at this difficult time. Thank you," said Michael Kobold. "He was found in his room by his family. And that is unfortunately the only question that I'm able to answer," Kobold added. Kobold said he had known Gandolfini for over a decade and had once lived with the actor, adding that the star, who was also an ambassador to his company, had been "like a big brother" to him. Gandolfini, whose performance as Tony Soprano made him a household name and ushered in a new era of American television drama, had been scheduled to attend the closing of the Taormina Film Festival in Sicily on Saturday (June 22).
