June 22 - Flash floods and landslides unleashed by early monsoon rains have killed at least 560 people in northern India and left thousands missing. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.

Tens of thousands are still stranded as flash floods and landslides unleashed by early monsoon rains have killed at least 560 people in northern India. The death toll is expected to go higher. The military has been deployed in rescue efforts with the government saying some 33,000 people have been rescued this week. Water batters India's southern coast. People find safety where they can after scores of homes and villages have been battered by water. Citizens are pitching in. Sikhs from Delhi prepare traditional foods to help those who have nothing left. The government has pledged 167 million dollars for disaster relief. For many their needs are basic -- and efforts continue to provide help. The military's ongoing efforts have rescued thousands -- pulling people, many of them Hindu pilgrims and tourists, from the foothills of the Himalayas. Thousands are still missing The rains had eased on Saturday but more rain is expected early next week.
