Fugitive Snowden seeks asylum in Ecuador: foreign minister

June 23 - U.S. lawmaker says Edward Snowden should return to U.S. to face espionage charges amid reports the former contractor is seeking asylum in Ecuador. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.

A car with diplomatic license plates, and an Ecuadorian flag waits outside an airport in Moscow amid reports former US spy agency contractor Edward Snowden had arrived in Russia. His final destination is unknown but Ecuador has signaled he is seeking asylum. Snowden faces several charges including unauthorized communication of national defense information and willful communication of classified communications intelligence to an unauthorized person. On Sunday House Intelligence Committee Chairman told NBC's meet the press that Snowden should come home to face the music. (SOUNDBITE) (ENGLISH) HOUSE INTELLIGENCE COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN, MIKE ROGERS, SAYING: " If he really believes he did something good he should get on a plane come back and face the consequences of his actions." Ecuadors Foreign Minister tweeted earlier that Snowden requested has asylum. Ecuador has given political asylum to the founder of WikiLeaks, Julian Assange, who has spent more than a year holed up at Ecuador's embassy in London.
