June 27 - U.S. President Obama had high praise for the Supreme Court ruling on gay marriage as he lauded Nelson Mandela. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.

Fanfare on the streets of Senegal as U.S. President Barack Obama's motorcade heads into the presidential Palace. At a news conference with his Senagalese counterpart his thoughts turned to home as he praised the U.S. Supreme Court ruling on gay marriage. (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA SAYING: "I think the Supreme court ruling yesterday was not only a victory for the LGBT community, I think it was a victory for American Democracy." He also spoke about what is on the mind of many Africans. (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA SAYING: "To see Nelson Mandela, step forward after 27 years of captivity, and not only help usher in democracy and majority rule but one person one vote in South Africa, as importantly for him to say I embrace my former captors, and my former oppressors and believe in one nation and believe in judging people on the basis of their character and not their color. It gave me a sense of what is possible in the world." Obama confirmed that he still plans to travel to South Africa in the coming days.
