There were anti-government protests in Istanbul as well as in the capital, Ankara. Possibly fearing the two weeks of violent riots that rocked the Turkey in May, police turned to smoke grenades to try and disperse demonstrators. At one point, riot police charged into the crowd. Many here are angry about the recent killing of a Kurdish man by security forces in the southeastern part of the country.
