Wreckage and rubble lay strewn across the centre of Tuz Khurmato, after a deadly blast struck on Thursday. The car bomb left at least one person dead and 28 injured. Tuz Khurmato, north of Baghdad, is a disputed area with a mixed population of Kurds, Arab Sunnis and Shi'ite Turkmen. The latter have been recently targeted in a series of attacks on their gatherings and headquarters, as well as against prominent members of their community. In other violence in Iraq on Thursday, at least five policemen were killed in a suicide bombing in the west of the country. Tensions have been inflamed by the civil war in neighbouring Syria, where the conflict is increasingly being fought along sectarian lines. The number of people killed in militant attacks across Iraq in June was more than 1,000, still well below the levels seen during 2006-07 when it sometimes topped 3,000.
