A new beauty treatment is sliding into the spotlight … snail slime! Ci:z.Labo salon in Tokyo claims putting live snails on clients' skin is beneficial. Beautician Manami Takamura explains. SOUNDBITE: Manami Takamura, beautician, Clinical-Salon Ci:z.Labo, saying (Japanese): "The snail slime makes your skin really supple and removes dry, scaly patches. It's also got great hydrating properties and moisturizes the skin. So when your face is all dried out after sunburn it can really help the repair process." While there's no scientific evidence for the advantages of snails, they were apparently used by the ancient Greeks and Romans as a remedy for various ailments. And Takamura insists that all that slithering does feel good. SOUNDBITE: Manami Takamura, beautician, Clinical-Salon Ci:z.Labo, saying (Japanese): "It feels cool and refreshing, and the soft pulling sensation is almost like a massage. So when you close your eyes you wouldn't even know there was a snail on your face - lots of customers get so relaxed they fall asleep." The salon employs five molluscs which are used in a voluntary add-on to the 'Celeb Escargot' treatment. But there is a downside - the snails only produce enough slime for one client per day. So don't hide in your shell - let these snails make their mark on your beauty regimen.
