ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: Pope Francis called on the young to build a "more just and united world" on Wednesday during his first mass since arriving to Brazil for World Youth Day events. The mass, held on the third day of his visit for World Youth Day, a biennial Church gathering being celebrated in and around Rio de Janeiro, was the first given by Pope Francis outside Italy since ascending to the papacy in March. It was held at an important Catholic shrine to the Virgin Mary as part of his week-long trip to Brazil, home of the world's largest Catholic population. The pope arrived to Rio de Janeiro on Monday and traveled to the Aparecida shrine early on Wednesday where throngs of faithful braved chilly wet weather to wait and greet the pontiff outside the temple in the state of Sao Paulo in southeastern Brazil. An estimated 150,000 people were in attendance at the service about 162 miles (260 km) west of Rio. The pope focused on the topic of the week, Catholic youth, during the sermon. The ongoing World Youth Day events, which are expected to attract more than 1 million people from around the world, are an effort by the Vatican to galvanize young Catholics at a time when rival denominations, secularism and distaste over sexual and financial scandals continue to lead some faithful to abandon the Church.
