Snowden in limbo as U.S. says Russia can still "do the right thing"

July 24 - Fugitive U.S. spy agency contractor Edward Snowden's hopes of leaving Moscow Airport are dashed as he fails to secure permission to leave. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.

For more than a month this is the place fugitive U.S. spy agency contractor Edward Snowden has called home. His hopes of leaving the transit area of a Moscow Airport were dashed Wednesday when he failed to secure permission from Russia to leave. His lawyer Anatoly Kucherena has not given up hope. (SOUNDBITE) (Russian) RUSSIAN LAWYER ANATOLY KUCHERENA, SAYING: "I have to tell you the asylum matter has not yet been resolved. That means nobody has rejected anything coming from Edward, but unfortunately the situation we have now is indeed unusual for Russia. You have to take our bureaucracy into account, therefore his papers are still being considered." At the State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki made it clear the U.S. would only accept one result. (SOUNDBITE) (English ) STATE DEPARTMENT SPOKESMAN JEN PSAKI, SAYING: "Obviously any move, that would allow Mr. Snowden to depart the airport would be deeply disappointing." She said Secretary of State John Kerry has spoken with his Russian counterpart. (SOUNDBITE) (English ) STATE DEPARTMENT SPOKESMAN JEN PSAKI, SAYING: "He reiterated our belief, the belief of the United States, wherer he will have a fair trial, that Russia still has the ability to do the right thing." Bolivia, Nicaragua and Venezuela have have offered sanctuary to Snowden. But none of the countries can be reached by a direct commercial flight so Snowden has requested temporary asylum in Russia until he believes he can safely reach one of them.
