ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: Pope Francis was given the keys to the city of Rio de Janeiro Thursday morning, on the fourth day of his visit to Brazil centered on the Catholic Church's World Youth Day. The pope was greeted by Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes at city hall where a large crowd gathered to witness the moment and see the first Latin American pope in person. Pope Francis has received a warm welcome in Brazil, which has the world's largest Catholic population, and has met large international crowds at every stop he has made since arriving here on Monday (July 22). Paes led the pope through the halls of city hall where he met with other city officials as well as the president of the Brazilian Olympic Committee, Carlos Arthur Nuzman, who gave the pontiff a green T-shirt. Rio will host the Olympic and Paralympic games in 2016. The pope also met and shook hands with a number of Brazilian Olympic athletes. He paused to bless Brazilian basketball legend Oscar Schmidt who suffers from brain cancer. As the hall-of-famer knelt down in front, the pope he touched his head. Paes led the pope to a balcony overlooking the crowd gathering below them where he officially presented him with a key to the city. Pope Francis thanked everyone in attendance and offered them a blessing. "Good morning to all. Thank you very much for being here at this time. And now, from my heart, I am going to bless all of you and your families," the Pope said. Onlookers braved unusually chilly weather and sporadic rain to line the streets leading to the city's governmental headquarters. Later in the day, Pope Francis will visit a Rio slum and will preside over services on Copacabana beach on Friday (July 26) and give mass at a pasture outside the city on Sunday (July 28), his last day in Brazil.
