ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: Pope Francis visited the home of residents of a Rio de Janeiro "favela" slum neighborhood on Thursday on the fourth day of his visit to Brazil centered on World Youth Day events. The pope, who has focused his young pontificate on rallying the Church on behalf of the poor, spent about 10 minutes visiting with a family while he toured the Varginha community, part of the larger Manguinhos complex. The pontiff walked part of the sprawling shantytown, or favela, of ramshackle brick dwellings that until recently was overrun by violence and controlled by drug lords by foot waving and greeting the poor residents living here. The Vatican said the pope wanted to be in close contact with inhabitants which is what led him into this home where a large family waited anxiously to welcome him. He visited with the family kissing their youngest members and offering blessings. At one point he even held a baby girl in his arms. The pope encouraged community residents to have open and warm dialogue with one another in order to improve their daily living conditions.
