Deposed Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi, seen here one month into his presidency in 2012 meeting with leaders of the Palestinian militant group Hamas. On Friday, Mursi was officially charged with a number of offences, including killing soldiers and conspiring with Hamas. According to state media, the charges are related to his 2011 prison escape along with other members of his Islamist group, the Muslim Brotherhood. State media did not reveal the evidence presented against Mursi nor his current location. The former president was taken into custody on July 3 after being ousted by the military, but had not faced any legal measures until now. A spokesman for the Muslim Brotherhood described the accusations as "ridiculous." Hamas also made a statement, calling on Egypt's interim government, backed by the military, to prove Hamas had indeed meddled in the nation's domestic affairs. The news comes as Egyptians prepare to take to the streets once more in mass rallies for and against Egypt's first freely elected leader, revealing just how deeply divided the country remains two years after the fall of Hosni Mubarak.
