Deaths reported in Egypt as violence escalates

July 27 - The Muslim Brotherhood say at least 30 people have been were killed in violence in Cairo, while a number of other deaths are reported as rival demonstrators clash. Sarah Charlton reports.

At least nine people have been killed during rallies by supporters and opponents of ousted President Mohamed Mursi. Across the country huge crowds gathered from both sides on Friday (July 26) as the turmoil threatens to divide the nation. Supporters of the Islamist president want him re-instated. But others are in favour of the military operation that drove him from office. In Cairo, makeshift medical facilities are treating some of the hundreds injured in heavy fighting. The Muslim Brotherhood say some 30 people have been killed in an attack during a rally by pro-Mursi supporters. Witnesses reported heavy gunfire in early hours of Saturday (July 27) morning. Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood accuse the army of inciting trouble so they can justify moving against the Islamists. The president remains in military detention and is reportedly under investigation for murder.
