July 30 - Northern and southwestern China have been hit by torrential rain, triggering landslides causing widespread damage and at least one death. Tom Dinham reports.

This village in northwestern China's Gansu Province was devastated by a combination of torrential rain and landslides.
Many were caught by the landslide unawares, with at least one villager being killed.
(SOUNDBITE) (Mandarin) UNNAMED MAJIABA VILLAGER SAYING:
"The landslide fell within an instant. It all came down with tree branches."
Most of the villagers have been evacuated, with authorities concerned by the possibility of further landslides.
Days of heavy rainfall in southwestern Sichuan province have also triggered floods and landslides affecting two cities in the area, Meishan and Leshan.
Overall, more than 43,000 people in 21 townships have seen torrential rains, according to state media.
