ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION STORY: The IRS told congress Friday that tax return fraud is an increasing problem that the agency is struggling to keep up with. The House Oversight Subcommittee responded by saying that the IRS is not doing enough to catch the thieves. "This is a problem that's growing exponentially... we need some very sophisticated solutions here," IRS acting commissioner Daniel Werfel told the committee. But in an often contentious hearing, Congressman Darrell Issa accused Werfel of obstruction. He said the IRS had to do more to enforce tax law. "The IRS is clearly behind the thieves," Mr. Issa said, adding, "Why rob a bank, when you can rob Medicare, Medicaid, and the IRS?" Chairman John Mica challenged the IRS acting commissioner Daniel Werfel, demanding to know why such few convictions had been made in the case of identity theft and tax fraud. As far as Mr. Mica knew, there were only 4 convictions made this year, although Mr. Werfel was unable to confirm that number.
