ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: Tens of thousands of supporters of ousted Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi marched through Cairo on Friday, demanding Mursi's reinstatement amidst a looming threat that Egyptian authorities will clear out two pro-Mursi sit-ins with force. Also on Friday, Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood criticized the U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry for saying the Egyptian military was "restoring democracy" when it toppled Mursi. The latest pro-Mursi demonstrations in Cairo began at mosques the capital. They were due to converge on the two pro Mursi sit-ins at the Raba'a al-Adawiya and Nahda squares. Thousands responded to the Brotherhood's calls for protesters to come out in defiance of warnings from the new army-backed government to abandon their protest or face action from security forces. International diplomats, rights groups and Egyptian religious leaders have appealed to authorities to avoid bloodshed. Almost 300 people have died in political violence since Mursi was overthrown on July 3, including 80 of his supporters shot dead by security forces in a single incident last Saturday. Mursi's supporters have rejected a transition process put in place by the military and its allies amongst Egypt's liberal political parties and even conservative Islamists. But the new civilian interim government installed by the military received a boost on Thursday from Kerry's comments after the United States had previously given mixed messages about events in a country that has long been a bulwark of Washington's Middle East policy. Kerry has called on Egypt to respect the right of peaceful protest, including the pro-Mursi rallies. But the authorities have shown no sign of retracting their threat to clear the pro-Mursi sit-ins by force, and tensions are high as Mursi's supporters gather once more in force in defiance of the military.
