All of the action was supposed to be in court. But on Monday, supporters of 300 people accused of plotting against Turkey's government, were outraged to discover the road leading to the courthouse blocked.
Riot police with tear gas and water cannons drove the group back.
The court sentenced a former military chief to life in prison and dozens of others including opposition members of parliament to long jail terms.
The proceedings, according to critics, have put in sharp focus Prime Minister's Tayyip Erdogan's approach to dissenters.
