VIDEO CANNOT BE INDEPENDENTLY VERIFIED BY REUTERS Warplanes bomb the village of Salma in Northern Syria. Amateur video that could not be independently verified by Reuters - purports to show President Bashar al-Assad's air force working to defend the stronghold province of Latakia - from the threat of advancing rebels. Recently, rebel forces have made gains across northern Syria - while Assad's forces continue to control most of southern and central Syria. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights group reported that about 20 people died in the air strikes on Salma - and several were injured. The United Nations has said more than 100,000 people have been killed in the now 28-month long conflict - and 1.7 million Syrians have been forced to flee to neighboring countries.
