Wind and rain lash southern China as Typhoon Utor hits. The cyclone had eased to a tropical storm by Thursday morning after sweeping through Guangxi and Guangdong provinces the day before. Utor left felled trees and damaged buildings in its wake. Cyclones are common at this time of year in the South China Sea, picking up strength from the area's warm waters and dissipating over land. More than 158,000 people were evacuated in southern China after Utor devastated parts of the Philippines, killing six.
