A 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck central New Zealand Friday but caused only minor damages. Traffic was snarled along roads and highways, and some air, rail and bus services were suspended. There was also widespread power outages. There have been no reports of serious injuries, but for some, the quake was all too familiar to the 2011 tremor in Christchurch that killed nearly 200 people. FD (SOUNDBITE) (English) MATISHA SAYING:"I felt calm at first but then when you got downstairs it's all of a sudden this panic hits you. I just don't want to be in another one, yeah. I don't really feel safe around here anymore." (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNIDENTIFIED PERSON SAYING:"The wires were shaking, the tree looks like it was going to fall down, and like everything was just about, it was crazy." The tremor hit near the northern tip of the country's South Island and was dangerously shallow. Earthquakes are common in New Zealand, whose two islands lie along the Australia-Pacific tectonic plate boundary.
