STORY: This photo of U.S. soldier Bradley Manning dressed as a woman was released last week by his defense attorneys, who said the army ignored his mental health issues.
Now, Manning has come out publicly to say he identifies as female, and wants to live as a woman named Chelsea.
He released a statement on Thursday via the NBC News program "Today".
'As I transition into this next phase of my life,' Manning wrote, 'I want everyone to know the real me. I am Chelsea Manning. I am a female. Given the way that I feel, and have felt since childhood, I want to begin hormone therapy as soon as possible. I hope that you will support me in this transition.'
Manning also asked that, starting today, people call him by his new name and to address him by the feminine pronoun.
She signed her letter "Chelsea E. Manning".
The 25-year old soldier has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for launching the biggest breach of classified material in the country's history.
Manning's lawyer tells NBC he expects his client to eventually be pardoned for his crimes.
