ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION Nearly one thousand firefighters and 270 vehicles were trying to extinguish seven fires across Portugal on Saturday (August 24), according to the National Authority for Civil Protection (ANPC). The fires raged from Vila Real, Braganca, in the north to Setubal, near Lisbon, in the south and the ANPC said three of the seven fires were regarded as very large. Several houses had to be evacuated in Setubal where the main road also had to be closed. Viseu has been the worst affected region over the last week; on Thursday (August 22) one firefighter died and nine were wounded because of the flames. The fire in Vouzela, Viseu reignited in the early hours of Saturday even though the emergency services had previously thought it was under control and several vehicles were burnt-out. Two residential areas were under threat in Chaves while another fire started just before 0200GMT in Outeiro Seco. However, the area which is causing most concern for the emergency services and authorities is a fire that broke out in Serra da Estrela's Natural Reserve Park on Friday (August 23) night. Firefighters are struggling to get near to the flames because access to the park is limited.
