Syria says "terrorists" will strike Europe with chemical weapons

Aug. 28 - Syria says the U.S., Britain and France helped ''terrorists'' use chemical weapons, and those same groups will soon use them against Europe. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.

Syrian government officials continue to point the finger at rebel forces -- saying that they are the ones that used chemical weapons on civilians last week.
Syria's deputy foreign minister Faisal al Maqdad says the U.S., Britain and France will regret their role in supporting government foes.
SYRIAN DEPUTY FOREIGN MINISTER, FAISAL AL-MAQDAD, SAYING:
"The most dangerous thing that the United States, Britain and France encourage and adopt are the words of these terrorists. The most dangerous thing will be that those terrorists will use chemical weapons, soon, against European people."
While the West is still weighing a response to the attack -- in a Damascus market some residents voice confidence about what ever comes.
. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) VENDOR SELLING NUTS, MOHAMAD KAMAL, SAYING:
"We have been resisting for two and half years and America is threatening us. Thank God the people are strong and we are not afraid. Syria is protected by God. The army is strong and the leadership is strong and with God's will nothing will happen to us."
(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) DAMASCUS RESIDENT, FATEN, SAYING:
"If they hit us and hopefully they will not, if they hit us I will remain firm with my family. With God's will all Syrians will remain firm and we will come out stronger after the strike."
Syrians have faced daily bloodshed and the constant threat of shelling in their country's 2-1/2-year old civil war, which has claimed the lives of more than 100,000 people.
