Miley Cyrus has twerked her way into history.
The once squeaky-clean Disney star is now a 20-year-old pop princess who left tongues wagging after her August 25th MTV Video Music Awards appearance.
After performing her new single "We Can't Stop", then teaming up with Robin Thicke for "Blurred Lines", the girl once known as "Hannah Montana" has been caught in a firestorm of criticism.
Within minutes of hitting the stage, social media exploded with Cyrus-related tweets setting a record with over 300,000 tweets-per-minute -- totaling 4.5 million mentions.
Singer Kelly Clarkson took notice and tweeted: "Just saw a couple performances from the VMA's last night. 2 words…. #pitchystrippers."
Since the show, the word "twerk", a provocative dance made famous before Cyrus was even born, has been added to the Oxford English Dictionary.
Oxford says the word has generated enough evidence of usage to be added to its online dictionaries.
Cyrus first became a star at age 11, appearing alongside her father, country crooner Billy Ray Cyrus, on the Disney series "Hannah Montana".
Since the show's end in 2011, Cyrus has attempted to distance herself from the wholesome character that made her famous.
Currently, the Tennessee native is engaged to be married to actor Liam Hemsworth.
Cyrus' new album "Bangerz" will be released on October 3rd.
