An Indian teenager - seen here with his head covered - has been sentenced to three years in jail for his role in a brutal gang rape and murder last December.
The 17-year-old - one of six charged in a case that shocked this country - was handed the sentence in a New Delhi juvenile court.
The mother of the 23-year-old victim criticised the verdict, saying the teen deserved to be hanged.
(SOUNDBITE) (Hindi) MOTHER OF DELHI GANG RAPE VICTIM, SAYING:
"By not punishing this teenager, this verdict is encouraging other teenagers to indulge in such acts and does not provide any safety to girls."
The attack has sparked massive protests across India, where activists say sexual assaults against women are rampant.
In this case, police say the gang raped and beat the victim - a physiotherapy student - on a Delhi bus late last year. They threw her onto the highway after raping her.
She died two weeks later from her injuries.
The remaining defendants are on trial in a special fast track court and if convicted, they face the death penalty.
