Mother of gunman Aaron Alexis apologizes to victims' families

Sept. 18 - Cathleen Alexis says she does not know why her son did what he did. The apology comes as high ranking U.S. officials acknowledge some red flags were missed. Linda So reports.

SOUNDBITE: MOTHER OF NAVY YARD GUNMAN AARON ALEXIS SAYING: "To the families of the victims, I am so, so very sorry that this has happened. My heart is broken." The mother of gunman Aaron Alexis is apologizing to the victims' families. Twelve people were killed on Monday when her son went on a shooting rampage at the Washington Navy Yard. The mother Cathleen Alexis did not want to go on camera, but she read an audio statement. SOUNDBITE: MOTHER OF NAVY YARD GUNMAN AARON ALEXIS SAYING: "His actions have had a profound and everlasting effect on the families of the victims. I don't know why he did what he did and I'll never be able to ask him why." Alexis, a former Navy reservist and military contractor used a valid ID to gain access onto the Navy Yard. But now questions are being raised as to why he continued to have military security clearance despite his history of gun related charges and mental health issues. SOUNDBITE: U.S. DEFENSE SECRETARY CHUCK HAGEL SAYING: "Obviously when you go back in hindsight and look at all this there were some red flags, of course there were. Should we have picked them up? Why didn't we? How could we have? All those questions need to be answered." But those answers will not come soon enough for the families of the 12 victims who had their lives senselessly taken by a mass gunman. SOUNDBITE: MOTHER OF NAVY YARD GUNMAN AARON ALEXIS SAYING: "Aaron is now in a place where he can no longer do harm to anyone, and for that I am glad."
