Court drops human trafficking charge against Saudi princess

Sept. 20 - Saudi Princess Meshael Alayban, who was accused of keeping a Kenyan servant prisoner in her California home, smiles after learning the felony charge was dismissed. Deborah Gembara reports.

Good news for this Saudi Princess who was in court to answer to charges she kept a Kenyan servant prisoner in her California home. SOUNDBITE:PAUL S. MEYER, MESHAEL ALAYBAN ATTORNEY SAYING: "The Princess is now and has always been innocent of human trafficking." Tony Rackauckas, Orange County District Attorney. SOUNDBITE: Tony Rackauckas, Orange County District Attorney saying: "The evidence indicates very strongly at this point that the victim here was not actually the victim of human trafficking, so this case had to be dismissed." Prosecutors say they were unable to corroborate the servant's claim that she was forced to work 16 hour days, seven days a week and was paid just over $200 a month. SOUNDBITE: Tony Rackauckas, Orange County District Attorney saying: "The original terms of her employment were not what had been stated. The fact is that she did receive medical care and there was no lapse or no refusal of medical care and we verified that. There really was not the restriction of her movements and her freedom to come and go as she certainly believed." The felony charge against her dropped, 42-year-old Meshael Alayban appeared relieved. Her lawyer Paul Meyer. SOUNDBITE: Meshael Alayban's attorney Paul Meyer saying: "We want to thank the district attorney for the amount of hard work that they were involved in. And on behalf of the family and the Princess, and the entire kingdom of Saudi Arabia we thank the district attorney for the integrity to dismiss this case at this time." Alayban, a wife of a Saudi prince was arrested in July at after the alleged victim told authorities the royal was holding her captive.
