Kenyan president says militants "defeated"

Sept. 24 - Kenya's president said that his forces had ''defeated'' Islamists from Somalia's al Shabaab. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.

"I had vowed earlier, we have ashamed and defeated our attackers" Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyatta says that the al Shabaab militants that went on a brutal rampage at a Nairobi mall have been defeated. But its unclear whether the four-day security operation at the upmarket Westgate center is completely over. There are still questions about whether any militants are still at large or hostages unaccounted for. Some of the victims are recounting their ordeal including a Kenyan couple who were helping to run a cooking competition. (SOUNDBITE)(English) ALEEM MANJI, SAYING: "And he turned and he said 'you did not spare our women and children, why should we spare yours, and his colleague opened fire. They weren't shooting to scare, they were shooting to kill. They aimed low to where the people were crouching, and they just opened fire, completely and absolutely." (SOUNDBITE)(English) ALEEM MANJI, SAYING: "There were Muslims around me who got gunned down, who died, Ruhila my co-host, she died, she was seven months pregnant, she bled to death. This is not a religious thing, never was, this is not the religion that I grew up with, Sixty-one civilians and six security personnel were killed in the four days of bloodshed. Five of the attackers were shot dead and 11 suspects are custody. al Shabaab said its militants are still holding out at the mall and their hostages were still alive.
