ROUGH CUT (NO NARRATION) STORY: Gleaming fabrics and touches of gold enlightened the mostly dark Spring-Summer 2014 collection by Belgian designer Dries Van Noten unveiled at Paris Fashion Week on Wednesday (September 25). Gold was all over the place backstage, on clothes but also in the make-up as artists applied thin sheets of gold on models' eyelashes. Van Noten has designed dresses for actresses for the Academy Awards, including Cate Blanchett and Maggie Gyllenhaal, and also for Belgium's Princess Mathilde, but he said he did not design his collections thinking of celebrities. Located in a vast building formerly used by the French railway company and accompanied by a single bass guitar, the models were walking the catwalk in a very metalic atmosphere before standing in front of a wall imitating huge gold bars. Though the silky fabrics and the golden ornaments brought a shiny touch to the collection, the colours used reminded more of autumn than of Spring. Van Noten first shot to fame as part of the Antwerp Six, a collective of avant-garde designers to emerge from Antwerp's Royal Academy of Arts in 1980-81.
