House of Representative Republicans refuse to give in to President Barack Obama's demands for straightforward bills to keep the government running past September 30.
The Senate is expected to pass a bill on Saturday that would extend current spending for another six weeks.
House Speaker John Boehner says the House isn't likely to sign off on that.

"I do not see that happening."
Republicans seek to delay the full implementation of the national healthcare law known as "Obamacare" for one year, in return for raising U.S. borrowing authority to let Treasury borrow through the end of 2014.
Visiting a community college earlier in the day, Obama touted his Affordable Care Act, which has been on a collision course with House Republicans.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA SAYING:
"Some of the same Republicans who warned three years ago that this law would be Armageddon, that's what they said Armageddon. Now, they are threatening steps that actually would badly hurt our economy, not because of the Affordable Care Act, but because of what they are threatening to do."
It is still unclear if the Democrat-controlled Senate and Republican-controlled House will work out their differences in time to avoid a shutdown.
House Republicans last week passed an emergency spending bill to defund Obamacare.
They are also challenging Obama on the debt limit increase that, according to the Treasury Department, is urgently needed by October 17.
The current fiscal year ends in just five days. No laws are in place to fund the government into the new year.
