Such military parades as this are rare in South Korea. This one was the biggest in 10 years. It's intended to show off new missiles to target North Korean artillery and long-range weapons. It was the first appearance in a military parade by the indigenously-developed Hyeonmu-2 ballistic and Hyeonmu-3 cruise missiles. They were unveiled in February after the North conducted its third nuclear test in defiance of international warnings. That came two months after it successfully launched a long-range rocket and sent an object into space. Earlier in the day South Korea's president pledged to boost the country's deterrent capabilities against its unpredictable neighbour. The vow came during a ceremony to mark the founding of South Korea's armed forces 65 years ago.
