U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry praised Syria on Monday for destroying the first round of its chemical weapons.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) UNITED STATES SECRETARY OF STATE, JOHN KERRY, SAYING:
"I think it's also credit to the Assad regime for complying rapidly as they are supposed to. Now we hope that will continue. I'm not going to vouch today for what happens months down the road, but it's a good beginning. And we should welcome a good beginning."
Kerry spoke to reporters on the sidelines of the Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Bali during a news conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
Kerry also said they would press the United Nations for a Syria peace conference by early November.
Under a joint plan brokered by Kerry and Lavrov, Syria began destroying its chemical weapons munitions on Sunday in an undisclosed location as UN monitors watched.
