Coca-Cola's record 181 billion servings in the third quarter is your Daily Digit.
The world's largest soft-drink maker said it shipped out that amount of its name-brand drink between July and September. Those deliveries helped profits meet Wall Street's thirsty expectations. Consumers also snapped up other Coke soda brands, teas, and waters despite a challenging summer.
But pop the top and you'll see it is really the non-soda beverages that consumers are grabbing for more often in America. Tea drinks saw double-digit growth, bottled water sales were up five percent, soda sales were up even less - but analysts say that's encouraging given the trend of Americans gulping down less soda overall.
That's been a problem. Soda makes up almost 70 percent of Coke's global sales. The other problem- more than half of all revenues come from international markets. Europe was still down and Mexico was hurt by stormy weather. Companywide sales were just below analysts' forecasts due to restructuring in some foreign operations.
There's hope, though, demand will bubble up along with next year's Soccer World Cup. Coke is rolling out its largest soccer marketing campaign hoping thirsty fans will keep a Coke in their hands.
