Amid strong Oscar "buzz," filmmaker Steve McQueen took to the red carpet for the Hollywood premiere of "12 Years a Slave." Set in America in the 1850s his gritty film has received widespread acclaim from critics and been touted for Oscar glory. Soundbite (English) Director Steve McQueen, saying: "Well, I mean you know it is not about nationalism. Right now, it is about me and you being human beings on this planet and if we don't put up barriers or nationality that come into play, this is a story about and an incredible journey of a man who survived slavery for 12 years." Chiwetel Ejiofor plays Solomon Northup, a free black man from upstate New York, who is abducted and sold into slavery. The film has raised the issue of why there aren't more movies on the topic of American slavery - something Ejiofor weighed in on at the premiere . Soundbite (English) Chiwetel Ejiofor, saying: "I think that there is a lot in this film that hasn't been spoken about that much and hasn't been as aggressively, openly, and directly discussed as they might have done. Which, I generally don't think is a good thing, which I don't think necessarily helps what ever the circumstances." "12 Years a Slave" opens in North American cinemas on October 18 - the same day it's due to screen at the BFI London Film Festival.
