Immigration and innovation linked: Harvard's Sawka

Immigration reform is key if the United States wants to maintain its innovative edge in business, science, and technology, says Mick Sawka, Head of Business Development at Harvard University. Sawka spoke at a Reuters Leaders of Innovation panel.

What do you see that -- major threats to or maybe they aren't threats to two maintaining. Global leadership in innovation among university cost. Yeah naturalized American so Canadian -- if you haven't picked up the I was wondering about actually. You -- -- and but being here. Did you give -- or immigration reform. Use the US we need them out -- -- and we need more hours. Four and users issues people are coming in getting the graduate degrees. Likewise we actually a few more Americans into science technology education about the charges make more abuses of the for instance can stay in certain companies and provision. It's actually get more Americans. So I really think it's a combination of the immigration and focusing education system more towards technology. To you now. But didn't say that some universities. Are getting really really competitive outside of the United States. -- equipment and investment. In the future and it got very bright people. They're extremely impressed by the universities and Australia and I didn't. And have an impression before but frankly. There -- equipment was you know top top line in the world. Where do you when you've interviewed -- people like you on board folks are you noticing any sort of captains in the American -- -- -- curiosity. Really I think. And I'm. We we have I think 55 different nations represented in fort research alone. Hand a lot of them are Ph.D.s and so that we draw talent you know from around the world but I don't see kind of a critical. You know shortfall he will. You know -- and our educational system that still -- good I just wanted to. You know make sure folks knew that you know usually universities that are really trying to compete against -- and -- -- international persons of what I've used it. -- Sport's newest sponsor we have also very high -- it looked very good actress. Ports are. And so I don't foresee like a huge issue because I think there's a natural pool of -- here. That come from immigration. You know the US citizens but I think yeah. We don't so I think that we have a tremendous. I would say. Particularly in this country in. Innovation. Coming from her since he's come from all the stuff that swirled I think it's so.
