Robbie Williams and Ellie Goulding among big winners at Q Awards

Robbie Williams was declared a pop idol at the Q Awards, with other winners including Ellie Goulding and the Pet Shop Boys. Edward Baran reports.

British singer Robbie Williams won the idol award at the Q Awards in London on Monday. SOUNDBITE, Robbie Williams, singer, saying (English): "I am nearly 40 next year so it's great that people still regard me as important enough to give me something to put on my mantelpiece." But later, in his acceptance speech, he struck a more cynical note. SOUNDBITE, Robbie Williams, singer, saying (English): "What can I say, out of all the made-up awards, to get a celebrity to an awards show, this is definitely one of them." Award presenter Tinie Tempah promised fans there'll be plenty more of his trademark cheeky humour on his upcoming second album Demonstration SOUNDBITE, Tinie Tempah, rapper, saying (English): "Definitely, definitely, I haven't grown up that much, I haven't grown up that much yet. So there's definitely going to be a lot of that....(Reporter: those shoes are quite cheeky?) "Yes this is a Burberry number, I love the guys at Burberry they have been very great. And I always love a little bit of a prop. so this is my prop today." Ellie Goulding took home best solo artist, while Jake Bugg delivered a monosyllabic acceptance speech for Best New Act. SOUNDBITE, Jake Bugg, singer, saying (English): "I am not very good at speeches and I didn't expect to win so I didn't really know what to say today." Foals beat off strong competition for Best Live Act. But frontman Yannis Phillipakis wasn't completely buying into the award show spirit. SOUNDBITE, Yannis Phillipakis, singer, saying (English): "It's just schmucks in suits. And I want to be on stage or I want to be in the studio or I want to be hanging out with my mates. I mean I want to win this thing but that's the transaction you make" Among the other winners were Scottish rockers Biffy Clyro who won best album, and Pet Shop Boys who won an outstanding contribution to music award.
