A record 258 million smartphones hit the global marketplace in the third quarter of 2013, says market research company IDC. Samsung is still the leader. The company moved more units than the next four vendors combined, capturing about one-third of all market share. A far second, Apple shipped 34 million iPhones thanks to the dual launch of the iPhone 5S and the 5C, with demand for older models not surprisingly slowing in anticipation of the product refresh. Next in line is Lenovo and LG Electronics, each with a market share of less than five percent. According to IDC, Record smartphone shipments were driven by low-cost Android phones and demand from China, which is becoming one of the fastest growing smartphone markets in the world.
