Few signs of a path for peace in Syria as the war rages on. So far after more than two years of conflict efforts to bring warring parties to the table are falling short. On Tuesday, the U.S.and Russia sat down with UN envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi in Switzerland -- hoping to launch the so-called Geneva 2 talks to end the war. (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.N.-ARAB LEAGUE ENVOY FOR SYRIA LAKHDAR BRAHIMI SAYING: "We were hoping that we would be in a position to announce a date today, unfortunately we are not. But we are still striving to see if we can have the conference before the end of the year." There were more encouraging signs out of the UN in New York in terms of eliminating Syria's chemical weapons. But U.S. ambassador to the UN Samantha Power underscores that progress is not a solution. (SOUNDBITE) (English) SAMANTHA POWER, UNITED STATES' PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE TO THE U.N., SAYING: "There is nothing yet to celebrate but it is significant that we have made significant progress toward taking away a potent weapon of war and terror from Assad and his forces. " The war in Syria has already killed more than 100,000 people. With no diplomatic solution in sight that figure is only expected to go higher.
