ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) U.S. President Barack Obama spoke at the White House Tribal Nations Conference Wednesday and discussed issues ranging from renewable energy, the importance of tribal sovereignty and the creation of new jobs. "The health of Tribal Nations depends on the health of tribal lands, so it falls on us to protect the extraordinary beauty of those lands for future generations," Obama told a group of representatives from hundreds of American Indian and Alaska Native tribes. "Over the last four years we've more than doubled oil and gas revenues on Tribal lands -- a big reason why the United States is now more energy independent -- so we're working with more tribes to get more renewable projects, like solar and wind, up-and-running," Obama added. "Standing up with with justice and tribal sovereignty, increasing economic opportunity, expanding quality healthcare, protecting native homelands -- this is the foundation we can build on. This is the progress we can make together." Over 500 federally recognized tribes were hosted at the White House, in what was the 5th Conference of its kind.
